Or, do as many others do, and make Oahu the first stop on your Hawaiian vacation before heading off to Kauai, Lanai, Maui, Molokai, or Hawaii

Banff and Lake Louise - Banff and Lake Louise overflow with abundant wildlife, pristine forests, jagged mountain ranges, alpine meadows, turquoise and emerald lakes, and mammoth glaciers. For the outdoor enthusiast this area offers unparalleled beauty and year-round activities. In the summer months there are hundreds of miles of hiking trails, fast-moving trout streams, and relaxing hot springs. During the winter you'll still be able to enjoy the hot springs, especially rejuvenating after a day on the area's many downhill ski slopes or cross-country trails. And all year round there is a gem in this natural beauty crown - Chateau Lake Louise, looking more like a regal palace than a hotel, set against the inspirational backdrop of snow-capped mountains and the amazing, blue-green Lake Louise. Canmore, a mountain village at the gateway to Banff National Park, is less than an hour from Calgary. Shadowed by the Three Sisters Mountain Range (Faith, Hope, and Charity), you can hike, rock climb, or simply sightsee. Nearby is the Centennial Museum, which recalls Camnore's mining beginnings and farther out is the Nordic Centre, host of the 1988 Winter Olympic cross-country events and now a year-round recreational area.

Mexico

Cancun - Cancun's history is rich - it has been the hunting and fishing grounds to the ancient civilization of the Maya, a haven for pirates, and most recently a small fishing village. Today, Cancun has become the ideal vacation spot. Cancun's white beaches stretch for more than 14 miles past modern, world-class resorts. An abundance of shopping, dazzling nightlife, and international flavor create an exciting retreat. Bask in the sun or enjoy the turquoise waters. Shop at many of the outdoor markets. Fish or snorkel in the waters off the coast. Visit the ancient Mayan ruins of Chichen-Itza and Tulum. Top off your stay with a Mexican fiesta or dancing at one of the many nightclubs

Riviera Maya - The Riviera Maya, south of Cancun, has white sandy beaches, coral reefs, Mayan ruins, set against the brilliant blue-green Caribbean, and tropical foliage. The area offers swimming, snorkeling, and diving. If you prefer dry land, the platforms above the shore of Xel-Ha (Shell-ha) provide an excellent view of the sea life. Playa del Carmen has restaurants and open-air shops along the waterfront. Xcaret (Sh-kar-et) combines interesting ruins with beautiful coves, inlets and an underground river. The Riviera Maya is an ideal destination for vacationers who love the outdoors, tranquility, and a quiet vacation alternative to faster-paced Cancun.

Puerto Vallarta - Once a tiny fishing village, Puerto Vallarta retains the timeless, laid-back feeling of "Old Mexico," The combination of sand and sunshine with old-fashioned Mexican charm is what makes Puerto Vallarta one of Mexico's fastest growing resorts. Puerto Vallarta is surrounded by lush mountains on one side and the 25-mile-long Bay of Banderas on the other. This scenic locale is punctuated with winding, stone-paved streets bordered by old buildings with red-tile roofs. You can horseback ride along mountain trails or walk to a scenic waterfall.
Los Cabos- Located at the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula, Los Cabos is actually two towns. San Jose del Cabo, a 200-year-old town, provides visitors with a look at traditional Old Mexico, and Cabo San Lucas is modern and bustles with activity day and night. The two towns are connected by a resort area known as The Corridor, where some of the Baja's most beautiful beaches are located. Dine at restaurants with menus ranging from Continental cuisine to the fresh catch of the day. You'll also find three championship golf courses, tennis facilities, and ample opportunities for water sports.
As the city's original name (Las Chorreras meaning "waterfalls") suggests, Ocho Rios offers a wonderful medley of natural beauty, including spectacular bodies of water encompassed by mature, lush greenery. One of the area's best-known attractions is Dunn's River Falls, a 600- foot stair-stepped waterfall that cascades down the mountain. A sight not to be missed! Be sure to leave ample time for the plethora of other activities available. Visit the final resting place of Bob Marley. Drive down Fern gully, a three-mile winding roadway densely lined with giant ferns. See Jamaican artistry first-hand at the Harmony Hall art gallery, featuring an excellent selection of traditional artwork and handicrafts. Tour a flower-lover's dream with visits to Shaw Park Botanical Gardens, famous for its poinsettias and view of the bay; and Carinosa, a garden with more than 200 varieties of orchids. And that's just to keep you busy during the day. After the sun goes down, the nightlife heats up. There's something for everyone in Ocho Rios - from English pubs featuring local music to splashy dance clubs with the latest music. Many of the resorts provide a variety of entertainment as well. Quieter in comparison to Ocho Rios, the north Coast gives a new meaning to the word peaceful. Enjoy the encompassing serenity as you take part in a variety of activities from horseback riding to cave exploration. Come to Jamaica's north coast where the air is fresh, the breeze is gentle, and the atmosphere is tranquil.

Located on Jamaica's west end, the fun-filled resort area of Negril offers a peaceful place for those who want to wander off the beaten track and get away from it all. The town stretches out along seven miles of uninterrupted, white-sand beach and the South Seas scenes for the movie 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, were filmed near the north end of Seven Mile Beach, at Booby Cay. In addition to numerous tourist attractions and sightseeing opportunities, this tropical paradise is home to more water sports than you can possibly imagine - sailing, water- skiing, windsurfing, water trikes, and scuba diving, just to name a few. When you need time out for some landlocked activities, hunt for souvenirs at the outdoor craft market, take in a local jazz festival, enjoy a relaxing round of golf, or explore the area on a bicycle tour. The fun doesn't end when the sun goes down, as Negril has a fun and active nightlife. You can stay home as many resorts offer nightly entertainment, or venture out to local discos and clubs for a night on the town. Or, spend a romantic evening with that special someone listening to the waves trickle to the shore as the moonlight glistens over the turquoise sea below. A perfect ending to a day in paradise.
Bahamas-New Providence Island, with Nassau as its hub, and Paradise Island, located just a stone's throw away; all lie within a graceful constellation of islands arcing southeast from the coast of Florida. The unique blend of international glamour and tropical ambiance gives the vacationer the freedom to do absolutely everything or absolutely nothing. Whether you are looking for sophisticated resorts or secluded beaches, vibrant nightlife or the perfect pool, colonial charm or tropical island beauty, you'll find it here in the Bahamas. Nassau, with its colonial past, offers many historical sights to explore. Within the city you can walk to Balcony House, dating from the 18th century; Christ Church Cathedral, built in 1837; and the Cloisters, ruins of a 14th-century French monastery that were moved to their current spot overlooking the harbor. Other important buildings include the pink and white Government House and the pink, colonnaded buildings around Parliament Square. Nassau shopping is some of the best to be found anywhere. For fun, head off to the Straw Market, one of the largest markets of its kind in the world offering, of course, items made of straw (hats, bags, baskets, etc.) plus native necklaces and bracelets, clothing, and wood carvings. For high-end jewelry, crystal, and china, head to the numerous shops along Bay Street for duty-free shopping, which can save you up to 50% off of U.S. prices. Eating out can be anything you desire. From a down-home Bahamian eatery to an elegant French restaurant, your choices are practically endless between downtown Nassau and the many resorts. Hotels and resorts in the area are also the focus of nightlife with their nightclubs, discos, and casinos. The dress code is relax, get into the spirit of the islands, and enjoy

Grand Cayman - A sparkling sea, soft white sand, and soothing sunshine are the gems of Grand Cayman. Add to that a history of pirates, pretty little pastel-painted houses, and you, too, will agree that Grand Cayman is charmingly beautiful. The real beauty of Grand Cayman, however, is underwater. Sheer coral walls, subterranean drop-offs, and an incredible variety of marine life all submerged in clear and calm waters make it one of the world's favorite scuba diving and snorkeling spots. For those who don't like to get wet, you can still see the sights of the sea aboard a submarine

Dominican Republic - Located on the exquisite North Coast of the Dominican Republic, Puerto Plata has long been a favorite of European travelers for the gorgeous, golden sand beaches, scenic mountain peaks, turquoise water, and lush tropical greenery. Nicknamed the Amber Coast for its abundance of amber deposits, the north coast of this Caribbean island is the place where Christopher Columbus first set foot on Dominican soil. Today, this area is a thriving tourist scene complete with resorts, golf courses, casinos, restaurants, night spots, historical landmarks, and, of course, shopping
Twenty years ago, the area known as Punta Cana was merely an isolated stretch of beach surrounded by a jungle. Today, that area on the eastern coast of the Dominican Republic has blossomed into the country's fastest growing tourism development. The jungle has been transformed into a secluded sector for tourists to enjoy the peace and relaxation that made the islands in the Caribbean famous. Punta Cana's 20 miles of pearl-white sand beaches merged with sapphire-blue waters creates scenery surpassed by no other. This sparkling gem in the Caribbean not only offers an impeccable ambiance, but also luxurious resorts, fine dining, and a wide variety of activities. Punta Cana features the longest coral reef in the whole island (about 19 miles long). Divers and snorkelers of all experience levels can explore reef caverns and nearby Catalina and Saona Islands. Or, for the truly adventurous, experience the beautiful underwater wonderland on a night dive. For land lovers, there are challenging golf courses; tennis courts, horseback riding, bicycling, or you can soar high above land and water on a parasailing ride.

Europe

Amsterdam - Amsterdam is a unique and charming city with boat-filled canals; narrow, brick, row houses; world-famous museums; and a youthful atmosphere. Wander along the canals, head out of town to see the windmills and tulip fields, indulge your taste buds with a Rijsttafel dinner, or simply enjoy a stroopwafel with your coffee
Rome- Stroll along the streets of Rome and see first-hand the flow of history from ancient empires to the 20th century. Visit St. Peter's Basilica, the Colosseum, Piazza Navona, and the restored Sistine Chapel ceiling.

Florence - In Florence you will find the finest examples of Renaissance genius -- Michelangelo's "David," Brunelleschi's dome of the Santa Maria del Fiore, Ghiberti's bronze baptistry doors, and numerous other gifts of Raphael and da Vinci.
Venice-Venice is exquisite - not only for its unique combination of islands and canals, but also for the stunning St. Mark's Square, Bridge of Sighs, and Doges' Palace. Visit them all and then glide through the canals in a gondola.

Brussels - Elegance defines Brussels. Its main square, the Grand' Place, is surrounded by ornately decorated and stately guild buildings and bountiful bouquets are sold from its center. Medieval shopping lanes are now paved with mosaic tile and topped with glass roofs. Best seen on foot, the city will charm you as you stop and listen to a courtyard concert, or discover what outfit the Mannekin Pis is wearing the day of your visit

Asia

Hong Kong - Hong Kong - a unique blend of East and West, nonstop energy and excitement. Shimmering skyscrapers cast shadows over century-old shop houses. And minutes away from the city's hustle and bustle are jungle-covered peaks, fishing villages, and monasteries. Hong Kong also means shopping - the bargains are everywhere. Take a harbor cruise, savor some of Hong Kong's delicious Chinese food, or enjoy an unparalleled view of the city from the top of Victoria Peak.

Bangkok - Bangkok is a sensory delight. You'll be swept away by a bombardment of visual contrasts - gold, leaf-covered temples beside modern office buildings and streets full of the exotic aromas of curry, ginger, and chili peppers, plus the beep-beep, ring-ring, and putt-putt of cars, motorcycles, and three-wheeled tuk-tuks. Along canals, known as klongs, women paddle their shallow boats and sell ivory-colored orchid leis and yellow plantains. In the center of the city, the Emerald Buddha holds court surrounded by rubies, sapphires, and gold. There is also a temple with at least one Buddha for every day of the year. And nearby, a building is graced by a five-and-a- five-and-a-half ton, solid-gold Buddha, discovered purely by accident when plaster used to hide its value from thieves cracked and revealed the treasure inside. Beautiful and friendly, the Thai people bring new meaning to the word welcome.

Phuket- South of Bangkok, along the western coast of Thailand, lies a sun-and sand-lover's paradise - the island of Phuket. Here you'll find six spectacular beaches, resorts ranging from casual to chic, and clear, turquoise waters perfect for diving. After the excitement of Bangkok, Phuket is the perfect getaway to relax and rejuvenate.

Singapore -As recently as 1819, the city of Singapore was a sleepy little fishing village. But one day, Sir Stamford Raffles, a representative of the British East India Trading Company, stepped on shore and the rest is history. In came tea, porcelain, and silks from China; spices, teak, and mahogany from Indonesia. Out went textiles, coal, and iron. What started as a business coup for Raffles ultimately made the city one of the world's busiest ports. In addition to its reputation as a major shipping center, Singapore is an enchanting city where East and West intermingle. The population is made up of more than 2.7 million Chinese, Malays, Indians, and Europeans. Two-story Chinese shop houses; gray-stone Victorian-style government buildings, and multi-story concrete and glass buildings stand within a stone's throw of each other. You can find great duty-free bargains along Orchard Road and superb restaurants serving the finest cuisine from around the world. And after a day of bargaining and buying, why not relax with an authentic Singapore Sling?

Beijing - Beijing is known for its grandeur - wide boulevards, China's finest museums, impressive temples, and the grand Forbidden City - made up of 800 buildings, it is the largest and best-preserved cluster of ancient buildings in China. Outside of the Forbidden City and throughout Beijing, hidden between the ever-emerging skyscrapers, you'll find the Hutongs, where the ancient way of Chinese life goes on as it has for centuries. The Hutongs are synonymous with a close knit neighborhood or small town, where families have lived in the same home for centuries, every one knows everyone, and the market is just around the corner. North of Beijing are some of the best preserved sections of the Great Wall - a breathtaking sight as it snakes over the rugged and rolling hills. Built in stages 2,000 years ago, the wall stretches for more than 3,000 miles. Your visit to Beijing also includes the Ming Tombs. There are 13 tombs across 25 square miles of Chinese landscape. The Ding Ling tomb of Emperor Wanli has been excavated and can be visited. It contained 26 treasure trunks, a gold crown, fabulous headdresses, and was sealed from the inside by two, four-ton, marble doors.
Shanghai-Shanghai has long been the commercial heart of China - from the flamboyance of the 1920s and 1930s, to the productivity and prosperity of today. The city is an intriguing mix - along the riverside are grand streets with European-style buildings and a stone's throw away is the old Chinese Quarter and its maze of meandering alleys. Shanghai's shopping is said to be the most varied and rewarding in China.
