Engagement Story Contest Winner!

Nicole Lyon and Scott Schultz | Engaged 05/30/11

Memorial Day weekend is an annual gathering for my family. It is our weekend to open the cabin in Northern Central Minnesota. We usually clean and get everything ready for the summer, but this year was special because my brother and sister-in-law had a baby boy three weeks earlier and we had to rearrange the cabin furniture to fit him in. As they story unfolds, this weekend of 2011 got even more special for me. We had a nice weekend, family, food and fun, excluding the storm the night before. My brother and family had just left for their home. We were packing up everything to head home, too and realized the boat lift we planned on selling was crinkled in half from a tree falling on it the night before. Scott had asked me to go down by the lake with him to look at the boat lift and return a pail to the storage shed. So I went with him. He put the pail away and said, “Lets walk out on the dock one last time before the weekend is over.” So we walked out to the end of the dock and we looked in the water and I was ready to go. We had a four hour drive ahead of us to get back to Winona and I knew traffic would be bad. Scott put his arm around me and asked, “Do you love me?” I said, “Yes.” But was getting frustrated because he had been asking me that all weekend. So I gave him a kiss and started walking back towards land and I said, “Why do you keep asking me that?” When I turned around he said, “Because I was wondering if you would marry me?” I put my hands over my mouth and said, “Are you serious?” Then my second question was, “Did you ask my Dad?” I always said who ever the lucky guy is will have to ask for my hand in marriage. He told me, “Yes I asked your Dad.” What he didn’t tell me was that he had just asked Dad five minutes before he popped the question to me. It took him all weekend to muster up the courage to ask Dad. I had told him YES and started shaking and crying. I asked him to put the ring on my finger and he said lets get off the dock first. He was worried he would drop the rock in the lake! Scott put the ring on my finger and we started walking back up to the cabin to show my Mom and Dad. I couldn’t stop looking at the ring. As we walked into the cabin my mom had asked, “Nikki do you think we need some air fresheners in the cabin?” I said, “I don’t know, but Mom” and showed her my hand. She started screaming and jumping around and gave Scott a big hug. My Dad got tears in his eyes then my Mom started crying and I was crying even more now. Scott must have thought what did I get myself into here! But all the tears were tears of joy. My mom then told Scott, “About time.”
We couldn’t wait to tell everyone of our news. We went to my grandparents and of course my brother and sister-in-law’s. Needless to say, we did not get back to Winona very early as I had planned. May 30 will never be a day forgotten for it is my sister-in-law's birthday and the same day my brother and sister-in-law got engaged 3 years prior.
